If you share a flat and only rent a room, you can apply for the Bono Alquiler Joven under its own rules. The rent cap is 300 euros a month, or 450 in regions that raised it, and the aid is still 250 euros, never more than you pay. There are two advantages: only your income counts, not your flatmates', and you do not need a lease under the Urban Leases Act, a room agreement is enough. The 2026-2030 Plan youth aid accepts rooms up to 600 euros and pays 60% up to 200 euros; the general aid, up to 150. On a 300 euro room the Bono pays 250 and the youth aid 180. Your padrón registration must be at that address.
The caps change for a room
Article 8 of Royal Decree 42/2022 sets a room rent cap of €300, half that of a flat, and lets regions raise it to €450. Royal Decree 326/2026 is more generous: €600 for the youth and general aids, and €250 in towns of 10,000 people or fewer. What does not change in the Bono is the amount: €250 if the room costs that much or more.
| Aid | Rent cap | Highest aid |
|---|---|---|
| Bono Alquiler Joven | €300 (€450) | €250 |
| Plan youth aid | €600 | €200 |
| Plan general aid | €600 | €150 |
Only your income counts
For a whole flat, the income of everyone registered there is added up. For a room, only yours, up to 3 times the IPREM: €25,200 a year. That is why the room Bono is the usual route in flats shared by students and young workers. The household padrón certificate will list your flatmates, but their salaries are left out of the calculation.
Bono or youth aid for a room
For cheap rooms the Bono almost always wins: it pays a flat €250, against 60% under the youth aid, which on a €300 rent comes to €180. The youth aid only wins when the room is above the Bono cap, because then the Bono pays nothing. The two are incompatible, so apply for the one that suits you best when your region has an open window. More detail on the amounts page.
Common mistakes in shared flats
The most common one is paying for the room in cash or through a flatmate acting as a go-between: afterwards there is no way to prove the payment to the region. Pay the landlord directly, by bank transfer, naming the month. The second is not registering on the padrón at the flat because the landlord objects; without padrón registration there is no main home and the aid is lost. The third is signing an agreement that states the price of the whole flat rather than your room: ask for what you pay to be written down.
